Safety in Miramonte: Trespassing, Encampments, and Neighborhood Watch

What Tucson Police and City staff have told MNA meetings about handling trespassers and encampments, and how to get Neighborhood Watch started on your block.

Safety comes up at almost every MNA meeting. Here's practical guidance shared at recent meetings.

Report it, so it counts

Report suspicious or non-emergency activity to Tucson 311, and call 911 for anything dangerous or in progress. Reports are recorded, and police resources are allocated based on the number of incidents reported.

Someone won't leave your property

At the May board meeting, neighbors discussed what to do when someone sets up on private property and refuses to leave. The advice given was:

  • Call 311 and report it, so the incident is recorded in the police database.
  • Consider a "No Trespassing" sign. Neighbors were told that with a sign posted, police will remove a trespasser in response to a 911 call from the owner.

Encampments on public property

At the Annual Meeting, TPD Community Service Officer Ramon Silvas explained that under Tucson's encampment protocol, the City generally gives 72 hours' notice before clearing an encampment on public property, so people can remove their belongings.

A policy advisor to Mayor Regina Romero, who lives in Miramonte, also told the board in May that Tucson Police are treating Speedway and Alvernon, including its bus stops, as a proactive policing area.

Neighborhood Watch

Several neighbors have volunteered as block leaders, and their blocks are being set up in TPD's Neighborhood Watch program. TPD has also recommended painting house numbers on curbs. Interested in starting a Watch on your block? Contact us and we'll connect you with the organizers.

Come to the Crime Coalition

The Alvernon-Fifth Crime Coalition meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Ward 6 Council Office, where you can talk directly with Tucson Police.
